Our church was organized in 1856. Last year we celebrated our sesquicentennial: "150 years ...and
God is Still Speaking," We had a celebration in September,2006.
The First Congregational Church is a United Church of Christ, one of 7,000
local congregations from New England to California, with missionary expressions around the world.
The United Church of Christ was formed in 1957 through a union of the Congregational Christian
churches and the Evangelical and Reformed churches. The UCC is a church of many firsts, including ordaining the first
African American minister by a Protestant denomination; leading the church toward the abolition of slavery;
ordaining the first American women into the ministry since New Testament times; ordaining the first openly gay minister; standing
with farm workers and civil rights activists in the struggle for justice; electing the first African American leader of an
integrated denomination; and most recently affirming equal rights in marriage.
We express our identity with the phrase: "God is Still Speaking," and affirm our openness to God's voice
in leading us toward new understandings of faith. You are invited to join us, for "whoever you are, and wherever
you find yourself on life's journey, you are welcome here."
